I saw this in this last week’s USA Weekend insert in Sunday’s paper and I thought it was such a cute idea that I’d share it in case you missed it.
The concept is that you take a ring and place it in the bind of a book of some meaning to you. You then angle light on it and it will create a heart shape on the book. The ring could be a wedding ring, a mother’s ring, one from a grandparent, etc. etc.
I wanted to see how this worked so I borrowed my hubby’s wedding band from him and put it in the bind of my Bible. I was hoping to catch The Love Chapter in the photo but it was too far from the center of the book. I was kind of excited when I was able to get The Lord’s Prayer right across from a “Don’t Worry” verse. It all seemed very fitting. It took me a minute to get the heart shape to appear. I had the best luck when I shined a flashlight straight down the middle of the bind at an angle. I think if I had some help, I could have gotten not only a heart in the middle, but also as a shadow as you can almost see one now in the bottom photo. That’s the other thing is you can make the photo as bright or dark as you want, as you can see I did two versions.
Now here comes the “fun” part if you are doing this by yourself—you have to hold the light just right and then try to snap your photo! You can see the two I was able to take above from different pages. I was just using the camera from my iPhone for the ones shown but I plan on using my good camera when I make the photo I will actually use. (I’m planning on hanging one by our wedding photo.) Typically cell phone pictures become distorted when you enlarge them.
What you do next is print off your photo and put it in a nice frame for your gift. Since there are a lot of photo deals out there, you should be able to do this fairly cheap. You might even be able to find a picture frame in excellent condition at a thrifty store for $1 or less.
I just wanted to share this as I know a lot of you have such tight budgets and maybe this might be a gift, with some meaning, that you could create for just a few dollars. You could always make this as a gift for someone’s wedding, too.
Here are a few photo companies to consider that might offer free photos when you sign-up (keep in mind, those will probably only be a 4×6 size):
If you wanted to spend a little more, you could always use the photo on a jewelry box, photo mug, etc. Good luck with your photos! I hope you are able to snap a really great shot!
