No Spend Month: Something to Consider?

Every August since I started this website, my husband and I have what we call a “no-spend month.”

It all started back in 2008 when we decided to try out Dave Ramsey’s Total Money Makeover plan and get the last of our debts paid off.

We decided to take on the challenge of seeing just how little we could spend in a month, how much we could earn through selling things we were weren’t using and see how much debt we could pay off with all that hard work.

While I know that in this economy so many of us are trying out best just to make ends meet each month but I wanted to share with you an article I wrote on Glowing Gazelles about how we go about our no-spend month and how you might be able to make one possible, as well.

At the very least, I encourage all of you to take a step back from your daily routines and examine just where your money is going and if there are any ways you can make cut-backs to help make your futures a little brighter.

Keep up with the couponing as it’s a great start to extra savings!

Wow! I do the same thing , well sort of. I also follow Dave Ramsey via his radio show. For the last three years I have been saving money like crazy by just assigning every dollar a “job”, and developing and keeping to my budget.

As I started to coupon I now take July as my no spend month, and August as my anything for free month, or close to free. I use these savings from both of these exercises for my entire Christmas spending. Couponing has taught and reinforced “delay gratification” skills, and I have a stockpile from the Spring and Winter. Summer seems to be a slow savings and coupon time for me anyway, with the Fall is when I can really get some great deals on the food that we eat.

I don’t feel as if I miss out on much with free Redbox, lots of free or almost free deals and this is my CVS time, so I use my Extra Bucks for stuff that I must buy. So, I am so happy to see someone else doing the same thing.

    My piggy-bank loves it!

These are all such great ideas, Teri! We are thinking about extending our no spend month into more months throughout the year as we would like to save up to move into another house.

I’m so glad that we have coupon options to help stretch our grocery dollars further!

Thanks for sharing your story, Teri!
