An Important Letter to My Readers – Coupon Geek Website is Changing!

March 21, 2012

To All My Fabulous Coupon Geek Readers:

Back in 2008 when I created “Coupon Geek,” I was working on finding ways to save money and help my family get closer to a debt-free life. I began sharing those ways with the few friends and family members that were following at the time. I was hoping that we all might benefit from sharing our stories. The majority of my posts were things we were doing to save a buck here and there that added up to quite a bit at the end of the month. Things such as frugal family outings, fun craft ideas, freezer cooking finds, ways to reuse/re-purpose items, sharing grocery store savings pictures (and how I accomplished those savings) and just ways to save on various areas of our budget. And a big part of those savings did come in the form of coupons and catching a hot deal.

Over the course of the last four years, I’ve been incredibly blessed to have watched Coupon Geek grow–far beyond my wildest dreams. I am so very thankful for each one of you that comes and shares a part of your day with me. But somehow I have slowly drifted from being a savings blog writer to one that focuses mainly on posting coupons and deals–with so many of them being “hurry before it’s gone” type scenarios. Sadly, a lot of what I get time to post is missed by a lot of you that only get a chance to jump online once a day or even less.

My writing and sharing the ways I’ve personally found savings each week only gets to pop-up “when I have time,” which always seems limited these days. I spend so much time finding “hot” coupons that I don’t get to share real-life ways to save. And while coupons are a huge part of my monthly savings, it’s just that–just a part of it. I’ve watched over the last year or two how coupon values are declining, store coupon policies are becoming stricter, shelves are being cleared and a lot of coupons are becoming rarer. It’s becoming a little harder for all of us to save, hasn’t it?

And while all this has been going on, I’ve also changed my own lifestyle. I’m taking more time to become knowledgeable in where my food comes from and how it affects my family’s health, short-term and long-term. I’m doing all I can to find ways to bring healthier options to our table and not break our budget (such a tough task!) Slowly, very slowly, I’m learning. And yet, I don’t seem to have time to share much of this with you.

So today is the day I end what some may classify me as right now–a “deal-blogger.” And instead, I am going back to my roots–to where I started–of a “savings blog writer.” Oh, there will still be coupons and deals–and even some freebies–to be found here on Coupon Geek. The website will still be quite similar. But they won’t be on a “as it happens” type basis. You may have even noticed recently that I’ve cut back on the time spent on that already. Overall folks, several of the things I post are still around at the end of the day or even days later. I am going to take the focus of my time off of trying to post things close to when they happen and instead use it to share ways to change your lifestyles as a whole–and help you to save money long-term. I hope to learn right along with you as we find ways to save on our own without always being so dependent on what the coupons and sales dictate for us.

I know this means I will no longer be the type of blog that some of you choose to follow. And while I never want to lose a reader, my heart truly wants my readers to be happy and you should only follow blogs that are a good fit for YOU. Time is precious. Stay connected with only those that bring you what you need from a blog. There are hundreds of new “deal-bloggers” popping up weekly and you’ll have no problems finding another one if you want those coupons and deals faster. Just please choose only those that have your best interest at heart.

I thank all of you that will continue to follow me. For those of you that have been following me from the beginning, you know the path I’m heading back to. I’m not “re-branding” but just working on getting back to who I once was. I’m a writer at heart, you guys. I may not always be the best at grammatically expressing everything but I’m just me–just trying to keep it real and have some fun while saving you a buck or two in the process, if I can.

I am going to take a couple days of vacation and then I’ll be back. I won’t be able to turn things around overnight. It will take a while to find what I feel works for good postings. But I’ll still be here if you are interested in hearing what I have to share. And when I pop back on in a couple days, I’ll not only have postings on ways to save money, but I’ll have some more of those giveaways that you love from my generous sponsors. Keep your eyes open on the Coupon Geek Facebook Page as I’ll probably be popping on every now and then to chat while “on vacation.”

Thank you for taking time to read this incredibly long posting! See you all very soon!

Enjoy your few days of vacation and just be aware that I am looking forward to reading your new ways to save without the use of coupons! Going back to your roots can be very rewarding! Good Luck!

13 coupongeek March 21, 2012 at 6:12 pm

Thank you, Joanne! My kids are so excited at the thought of me not working for a few days. I told them we can do whatever their heart desires since I’m doing what mine desires. :)

Thank you for continuing to be a reader! That means so much to me!

Thank you so much for your time and money saying deals. Im very new to couponing and as a mother of 4 it has helped tremendously. Thank you

15 coupongeek March 21, 2012 at 6:15 pm

Hi Cassandra,

Thank you so much for your kind words! I’m hoping that I’ll be able to find time to do even more posts to help the new couponers. It’s hard to figure it all out in the beginning but so much fun once you get the hang of it.

Thank you for being a reader!

Blessings to you and your family,
Jaycie

I will certainly be sticking around! I look forward to seeing your new posts! Thank you for what you do!

17 Jami Lynn March 21, 2012 at 6:24 pm

I look forward to the changes on the blog! We too are (slowly) switching our lifestyle. We’re expanding our garden this year, and taking more notice of where our food comes. We plan on exploring the outdoors more. We’re lucky to have a State Forest and a large State Park within 20 minutes – and both are free! I think the changes you and your family are making fall in line nicely with the changes my family has in store so it’ll be nice to follow along and get some inspiration :)

18 Christy March 21, 2012 at 6:30 pm

Jaycie!

I know you will be wonderful at whatever you do because you have a lot of heart! I’ve always thought so much of you and you have helped me grow not only as a blogger, but as a person. Your gardening, fun recipes, and cute activities for the kids are always what I have loved about your blog and can’t wait to see what you have up your sleeve! I wish you the best and will always, always, always be here to read, follow and be a friend (even though we both know I’m not always great at that these days). I love you and wish you all the happiness and love that your heart can hold with your new endeavor! XOXO.

Christy

I am a foodie like you and enjoy reading everything that you post whether it is coupons or food related. I WILL NOT be leaving. Please keep up your great work! We love you!!

20 coupongeek March 21, 2012 at 6:32 pm

Thank you so much, Jennifer! I hope I can keep finding ways for us all to save money. I’m always keeping my ears open and mind open to new things. We’ll see what happens! :)

Blessings to you and your family,
Jaycie

21 coupongeek March 21, 2012 at 6:34 pm

Thank you so much, Jami Lynn! I’m hoping that as I share things you’ll share what you find, too. We are along the same lines–getting more into the outdoors and just slowing life down some to enjoy it more.

Blessings to you and your family,
Jaycie

22 Alona March 21, 2012 at 6:37 pm

So many other coupon sites do the “here’s the deal hurry over now” type blog. I think your blogging will be a much needed change not just for you, but everyone else. Enjoy the time off with your family.

23 coupongeek March 21, 2012 at 6:41 pm

Christy,

We have always learned from each other and found such great inspiration from sharing what is in our hearts. You’ve been a great support to me over the years and you know I haven’t forgotten that. Some of my best ideas came from those 2AM phone calls, LOL. (Seriously wish you were in the same timezone) We’ll continue to grow together as bloggers, friends and just as people.

And you know I expect to see some more writing from you, too, right? ;)

Jaycie

24 coupongeek March 21, 2012 at 6:43 pm

Thank you so much, Gail! I’m glad you are a foodie because I have quite a few new postings in my head that are food related. I need to post them so I don’t have to keep bugging my hubby with listening to them all (though he’s such a good sport!) LOL.

Blessings to you and your family,
Jaycie

25 coupongeek March 21, 2012 at 6:46 pm

Thank you so much, Alona! It’s part of the reason I felt comfortable getting away from the “hurry up” side of blogging because I know it’s still out there if my readers need it. Hoping I can live up to finding other ways to save so that everyone can save twice as much!

Blessings to you and your family,
Jaycie

26 Megan March 21, 2012 at 6:51 pm

Thank you! In my own adventure in evaluating spending, one of the things that gets me in trouble is a quick offer. Oftentimes I don’t weigh those purchases the same as I would an item on my shopping list. So many are things we don’t need. I’ve followed you for a long time and appreciate your “back to your roots” announcement.

27 Kathy March 21, 2012 at 6:54 pm

Thank you for all the wonderful info, advice and savings ideas you have passed on. My family has benefited many times over because of your research and passion. Looking forward to keeping up with you when you return from some much needed time off. :)

28 Sandra @ The Sensible Mom March 21, 2012 at 6:55 pm

Hi Jaycie,

I just wanted to let you know that I won’t be going anywhere. :-) I’m a long-time reader, and I love the fact that you are in the Chicagoland area. (We went to the Sears aka “Willis” Tower today! But I digress…..) It’s always fun to know that the some of the blogs I follow are somewhat local.

Anyway, if you ever need help with the design of your site as you move in a new direction, I am a blog designer, too. :-)

I hope you have a great vacation!

29 Lisa Higdon March 21, 2012 at 7:04 pm

Change and growth are always a good thing! Remember the old adage of “teach a man to fish…” and stop stressing over posting deals that may or may not be available nationwide. I look forward to the new content.

30 Rhonda March 21, 2012 at 7:04 pm

Those minute-by-minute coupon deals have their place, but so does simple lifestyle changes that can save much more in the long run than a quick free item at CVS.

I, for one, look forward to a fresh new approach to saving & living. I will be here when you get back. Unplug, unwind & enjoy the present.

Rhonda

31 Corrie March 21, 2012 at 7:17 pm

Jaycie – I’m so excited for you to get back to what you love, and I look forward to reading!

32 Jen March 21, 2012 at 7:27 pm

I liked following you before.. but I think now I am going to LOVE it! Your new style seems to be where my heart is now.. I want to become a healthy, purposeful, frugal family. Can’t wait to see what happens with your blog! :)

33 Kayla March 21, 2012 at 7:38 pm

I just started following recently {last couple of months} but I totally get where you are coming from! I started my site but I realized that I didn’t want it to *just* be deals and coupons. I needed something more me, so I changed it up a little. Congrats on following your heart! I’ll still continue be a reader! :)

34 Sarah Parisi March 21, 2012 at 8:08 pm

I’ll still be here! I admire your willingness to make your blog what you feel it should be even if it means losing some readers. It can be hard sometimes to keep a blog true to your life, but I think it’s a great thing. I am very excited to see the new direction. It’s great to catch a quickie deal once in a while, but I think it’s nice you’re moving away from that and I think it’ll be even better. I too jumped on the couponing/saving every penny bandwagon for a while, but now I’m more concerned with the quality of food and were it comes from. I don’t always have the money to buy what I’d like to, but I’m working on it. Good luck!

35 Emily March 21, 2012 at 8:08 pm

Your blog reignited my passion for couponing since I started reading it almost three years ago. It was my first blog subscription of this type. Best of luck with your future blog-endeavors.

36 Percilla March 21, 2012 at 8:17 pm

Will be staying on as a reader! The way your blog was before is what brought me here in the first place. The hurry up deals are good but there are many of those. We need a place to help us with saving money while using healthier foods. Keep up the good work and I will see you on FB!

37 Brenda March 21, 2012 at 8:25 pm

I have been reading your blog of about a year and love it. I am looking forward to the ‘new’ website. Enjoy your few days off! Thanks for everything you do.

38 samantha March 21, 2012 at 8:30 pm

Sounds great! I look forward to seeing the new changes!!

39 coupongeek March 21, 2012 at 9:03 pm

Thank you, Megan! That’s always been my fear in posting a lot of the “hurry now deals” is that they don’t give my readers time to evaluate the purchase and can lead to impulse buys and actually a loss in savings. It’s hit or miss on those types of deals if they truly help overall.

Feels good to be going back to my roots! :)

Blessings to you and your family,
Jaycie

40 coupongeek March 21, 2012 at 9:05 pm

Thank you, Kathy! I love that you used the word passion as it truly is what I feel for helping other save money.

Thank you so much for being a continued reader!

Blessings to you and your family,
Jaycie

Thanks for all the time and effort you have put into this site…I hope doing the new site brings a smile to your face …and I cant wait to read about your adventures in saving:-)

42 coupongeek March 21, 2012 at 9:07 pm

Hi Sandra,

LOL, yeah I think I’ll always call it the Sears Tower, too. And someday I’ll get brave enough to walk out on that lookout ledge they just added.

Thank you so much for design work offer!

Glad to have a fellow Chicago-an following! :)

Blessings to you and your family,
Jaycie

43 Lori March 21, 2012 at 9:08 pm

Thank you for taking the time to let us know why you are changing and I fully support what you are doing. Couponing is just a small part of living and I feel as you do, that this should be a long term project, not just a quick save a buck here or there. I wish you the best and I will keep following you. Thank you for all that you have done!

44 coupongeek March 21, 2012 at 9:08 pm

Hi Lisa,

That is the perfect adage for this situation. I love it! Definitely done stressing over deals! :) I’m looking forward to the new content, too!

Blessings to you and your family,
Jaycie

45 coupongeek March 21, 2012 at 9:10 pm

Thank you so much, Rhonda! I agree, a free item at CVS is great but making a lifestyle change that can save you twice as much or more is definitely better.

I’m so excited about a few vacation days. I’ve never really unplugged and disappeared for several days!

Blessings to you and your family,
Jaycie

46 coupongeek March 21, 2012 at 9:12 pm

Thank you, Corrie! It was so much fun to see you again in Nashville. Every time when I get home, I always wish we had more time to chat.

It feels good to be going back “home” when it comes to the blog. I’ve missed the old days!

Hugs to you,
Jaycie

47 coupongeek March 21, 2012 at 9:14 pm

Thank you, Jen! Those are definitely my overall goals for the blog–healthier, purposeful and more frugal. It was much easier for me to keep on that path before when I was sharing it with everyone.

Thank you for continuing to be a reader!

Blessings to you and your family,
Jaycie

48 coupongeek March 21, 2012 at 9:17 pm

Thank you so much, Kayla! I love the deals and hot coupons just like everyone but they definitely can be time-consuming. It’s just me (and sometimes my techie friend for all that technical coding) running the site so I had to choose one path. Hoping it turns out for more savings for everyone this way.

Thank you for continuing to be a reader!

Blessings to you and your family (and good luck with your site!),
Jaycie

49 coupongeek March 21, 2012 at 9:19 pm

Thank you, Sarah! It is hard to lose readers but I owe it to all my readers to be true to me. I’m so glad there are so many “deal bloggers” now so I don’t have to worry about them losing out. When I first started blogging, there really wasn’t too many of us.

I’m definitely all for quality of food. It’s hard to afford a lot of it, but we do the best we can, too. You keep up the good work on that path, too–it’s so worth it in the long-run!

Blessings to you and your family,
Jaycie

50 coupongeek March 21, 2012 at 9:21 pm

Thank you so much, Emily! I am so glad that I helped you find your passion for couponing again!! I’m hoping to be able to do that again for others by helping them see real-life scenarios of how I saved money using my coupons.

Thank you for following me for so long–I’m deeply appreciative of that!

Blessings to you and your family,
Jaycie
